I am trying to install a Netweaver 7.4 java system on Oracle 11.2.4 and Linux

Hi Gurus,

I am trying to install a Netweaver 7.4 java system on Oracle
11.2.4 and Linux

it is a standard installation, I am using Software
provisioning manager 1.0 and have choose the following path

SAP netweaver 7.4 support release 2 ->Oracle->SAP
system->Application server Java->Standard system

while defining parameters for installation in the following
screen (Enter the required parameters for the primary application server (PAS)
instance and for the central services (SCS) instance.) I am being asked to
enter virtual host names for PAS and SCS.

I am unable to understand why I need to enter virtual host
name if I an doing a central/standard installation(all instances in the same
host).

Has anything changed for NW 7.4 installations ?

My host file have following entry:

# more  hosts

127.0.0.1  localhost localhost.localdomain localhost4 localhost4.localdomain4

::1        localhost localhost.localdomain localhost6 localhost6.localdomain6

  10.100.31.235 idmbox.ABC.com idmbox

screenshot attached.

Please help.

Regards

Priya

Hi Priya,

Have you tried giving complete host name like <servername>.domain.com or the with IP address of the host for a try. Try also pinging the server from you local system both with IP and Hostname.

Hi Priya,

As mentioned by arun check what the output of hostname.

Also in your host file try to check your looback settings.

My host file have following entry:

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

# more  hosts

127.0.0.1  localhost localhost.localdomain localhost4 localhost4.localdomain4

::1        localhost localhost.localdomain localhost6 localhost6.localdomain6

  10.100.31.235 idmbox.ABC.com idmbox

I believe its issue with your host files entries.

For loopback this should be the correct entries:-

127.0.0.1       localhost

# special IPv6 addresses

::1             localhost ipv6-localhost ipv6-loopback

So check with your Linux team to modify those and Also do try to see if the virtual or physical hostname is getting resolved.

also one more thing is you can try to use SPAINST_USE_HOSTNAME parameter for your startup options of sapinst so that it will take the default hostnames for sapinst.

Let us know the details of the outcome.

Thanks and Regards,

Thank you Every one for your answers. I really appreciate all of your effort.

we found out the cause of  issue. The issue  was related to the IP address that was maintained in the host file. The actual IP address was different then the one maintained in the host file.so installer was seeing 2 IPs during its execution.

This was a mistake done by our O/S admin. he corrected it and we were able to progress.

Priya.

Hi,

Make sure your /etc/hosts entry reads as follows (put idmbox before the FQDN):

10.100.31.235 idmbox idmbox.ABC.com

Scratch your installation and start afresh.

Priya,

1. Now enter idmbox again in the two blank fields.

2. Also read : 962955 - Use of virtual or logical TCP/IP host names

3. What environment variables are you setting before starting sapinst (please post here) ?

4. As opposed to using "Parameter Mode" = Typical (on Define Parameters Screen) , please use "Parameter Mode" = Custom.

You'll have to answer more questions but will have better control over your install.

Amerjit,

The order doesn't make any difference, I think. Priya, have you checked in the manual, is there any reference to virtual hosts ?

Hello Siddhesh,

Maybe running sapinst on Linux it doesn't but on AIX it certainly does. We use virtual addresses with aliases and FQDN and if the virtual/alias that SAP is looking for wasn't the first after the IP address then we had problems installing.

As I said, that's just what we experienced on AIX.

Hello Priya,

Just give your server's hostname for both blanks, sice you install PAS and SCS on the same server.

Hi Serhat,

Thanks for your reply.

But unfortunately the installer does not allow you to proceed with blank host names.They are mandatory fields..you you can see those red stars before the host-names.

Hello Priya,

So your question isn't about a problem but more for understanding.

As has been previously mentioned Venkat, please just give the same hostname for both instances. Remember, even though you are doing a "central" install, you are nonetheless installing two instances (ASCS + PAS).

Why are you being asked for a hostname for each ???? Well I guess that SAP is facilitating the day you may wish to move the ASCS or PAS on to another host. come that day you would just copy and modify the required files.

Hi Amerjit,

Thanks for your reply.

your points are well understood.

Unfortunately the installer does not accept the actual host name as virtual host name.

what i am trying to understand is why should installer ask about virtual hosts when i am doing a centralized (non-distributed and not an HA) installation.

Thanks

Hi Priya

From the snapshot you are trying to install the Application sever (Not on CI), you have to select the CI installation. Kindly refer the installation guide from SAP Service market place - http://service.sap.com/gudiefinder - Select your OS/DB and SAP version.

Hi Priya ,

Before starting the installation  make sure that you run the "Global Host preparation for an ABAP system" under "Additional preparation Option"

And then rerun the installation

Thanks ,

Hi Priya,

As you are doing installation of PAS and SCS on one host, you can give same hostname for both options.

Thanks,
