What is the use/purpose for distribution chain category in customization distribution chain control. I see that there are options for DC, Store and wholesale. What is the difference ?

The distribution chain describes the logistical function: A store distribution chain is for selling to consumers, a DC distribution chain e.g. for delivering goods to the stores (wholesale to supply wholesale customers). This implies how the system deals with the tax in sales prices: usually net prices are used for B2B scenarios (DC, Wholesale), and gross prices in B2C scenarios (store) - though not in all countries (e.g. in the US, also the consumer prices on the shelves are net prices). The system can be configured to include, or not include the tax when sales prices are calculated for different distribution channels. And furthermore there's an impact on the article master as well: for store distribution chains (Logistics store view), you could maintain a separate reference site.
