In-Place upgrade of OS: From Windows 2008 R2 to Win 2012 in Clustering

Hi,

We are running Netweaver ABAP 7.4 with EHP7 (Oracle 11g) on Windows 2008 R2 in HA/Failover Clustering. We just need to upgrade the OS from Windows 2008 R2 to Windows 2012. Please share your experiences if anyone has done it without migrating/system copy the whole SAP system. We want to do it by simply upgrading the OS only following standard Windows upgrade procedure.

Regards

Have you checked the SAP note 1721575 - SAP system migration to Windows Server 2012?

Microsoft does not support the upgrade of a Windows operating system if any software - including SAP software - is installed that is not part of the Windows operating system itself. Therefore, if, for example, you run an SAP system on Windows Server 2003, you cannot simply upgrade your Windows Server 2003 operating system to Windows Server 2012. Instead, you have to copy your SAP system running on Windows Server 2003 to another server running on Windows Server 2012.

You should consider doing a system copy to move to Windows 2012.

Cheers

Will this migration be a Homogeneous or Heterogeneous system copy?

as per the note 1721575 provided by RB

you can perform a homogeneous or heterogeneous system copy to migrate your SAP system to Windows Server 2012.

I would suggest to perform homogeneous system copy.

This will be a homogeneous system copy. You need to setup the target system (install Oracle and SAP) and then do a backup and restore of the database.

Definition of Homogenious system copy:

  • you do not change the operating system platform and do not change the database platform during the system copy
  • you can change the database version or the operating system version during system copy. Special upgrade steps procedures may be required when changing the database version.
  • you can migrate from 32 to 64 bit during system copy
  • you may use backup/restore method to copy the database content.
  • you can use the SAP export/import procedure to copy the database

Definition of heterogenious system copy:

  • you change the operating system platform during system copy (OS400 --> Windows, HP-UX --> Windows ....)
  • you change the database platform during system copy (Oracle --> MS SQLServer,
  • you can't use backup/restore procedure
  • you must use the SAP export/import procedure

Hi

Before starting the Homogeneous system copy, Kindly read the system copy guide from http://service.sap.com/guidefinder - Select the OS / DB and SAP Version
