Patch steps and logs

Hi,

Could anyone assist - where could I find the steps that a patch goes through (the ones that appear at the bottom of the screen when doing the install) and a list of logs which are updated during a patch installation.

Hi Anette,

the easiest would be to have a look at the logs in SPAM - there you can see the main steps - there are million more small steps - of normally no interest.

I would guess more or less nobody has that complete list ...

Hi Volker,

You cannot tell me something like that and not expect another question smile - no it is not local it is on the PRD partition. I did not realise that it would make such a big difference - the SAP consultants here maintain that the trans directory should always be on PRD but thinking about it the initial install writes all the data and cofiles so it makes sense. I just did not realise what a big difference it would make.

Thanks for the info - this forum definitely assisted a great deal - I would still have been waiting for an answer if you had not helped me with my other question.

Thanks tons for the info, Tim - you will not believe how much all this advice helps!

As for having fun - well I have approximately another 12 hours worth of patches IF my calculations are correct - so possibly expect some more messages as I dream up questions to ask.

Hi Anette,

then good luck, that it might run a bit fast )

btw: is the trans directory local ? If not, it will be about 2 times faster later with the local trans directory ...

all the best,

Volker

Thanks for the reply Volker - you are very helpful

I did find a document that defines the whole SPAM process rather well and some of the primary steps are covered in quite a bit of detail which was good, although it was for 4.6C and not 640. However it did satisfy my curiosity quite a bit.

Do you know what logs are normally updated. I know SLOG is the primary one and ALOG normally has some info in it as well - any others?

Anette,

ULOG will have some information too. You'll also want to be familiar with the tmp directory of the trans folder. AS the support pack is applied, the log files of current activities are stored here.

The SLOG and ALOG, however, should be your starting points. Each support packs will also generate specific logs which are critical for troubleshooting.

Have fun!
