Hi,
when SAP R/3 and SAP BI were alone installations the 1st was optimized for OLTP use and the 2nd for OLAP. Now, the two systems will work on the same installation.
Is there 1 DB for OLTP and 1 DB for OLAP, or is it the same?
With embedded BI, the DB Management is unified and so not optimized?
Can we say that the performances at DB level will go down?
Points for useful answers,
Claudio
Hi Claudio,
the fact that with release 7 of the Netweaver platform the BI component now is installed as a required component does not mean, that you shouldn't have dedicated systems anymore. It's just the case that for many developments specific features and structures of BW had been used in the past, so that it had been decided to integrate this component more as a standard option.
Nevertheless with Oracle 10g - which is required for this version of Netweaver - the configuration of the database has been strongly unified for both OLTP and OLAP usages. This is also reflected by the fact that there is now only one shared parameter note for Oracle 10g.
Just for the case there is a strong bias in the system to use rather much of the OLAP functionality and to do much BW "stuff" there are a few alternative settings for decent parameters.
So there is still the optimization as before - but nowadays there's not so much difference between the db setups anymore.
