Using RFID tags in EWM

Hi,

Our client is exploring the viability for using RFID technology integrated with EWM in their Warehousing processes - GI, GR, Internal staging. Can this be done without AII? The help.SAP.com page is not very clear whether AII has to be mandatorily used or not.
