Hi Peter,
What kind of error you see when you try to stop HANA from Studio? I assume you are using HANA One from Amazon Marketplace, right?
As of now (Rev 38), you have 3 ways to start and stop HANA server in SAP HANA One.
1. Once you follow the configuration guide (set hdbadm password, open ports and start HAHA after accepting EULA), every time you stop EC2 instance from EC2 management console, HANA will stop automatically and start works similarly.
2. You can SSH to the instance and use "HDB stop|start" as hdbadm, you can stop and start HANA in SAP HANA One.
3. You can use studio to stop and start HANA in HANA One. To use this please make sure the following are done correctly.
a) You are using HANA Studio Rev 38
b) You set hdbadm password and use this user/password in your studio
c) HANA One ports (50013 and 50014) are open and your firewall at the Studio side allows to communicate with HANA One at these ports.

Swapan
