meaning of by-product and co-product components in BOM

Hi

I do not really understand the reason for component type by-product and co-product in the BOM.

If I have a by-product during my production - why isn't it an Output of the production but part of the BOM? Is it taken into the floor stock by creation of an SFC at assembly time? 

The similar irritation for the co-product, which is a lower Quality of the planned product (according to SAP-Help). How can it be used?

Can anybody help?

These are just stored as flags against the BOM Component - there is no SAP ME functionality built around these component types as yet.
