Hi S Basis,

Your first sentence is kind of contradictory. What you have to do is, normally, what SAP recommends (at least that is the way it should be). What do you mean by that and what do you refer to?

Normally, after patching of the Kernel you do not need to do SGEN, but Kernel has to do with ABAP load, because of the ABAP compiler. Please check this note (last paragraph) for an explanation:

1994690 - Using the 7.41 kernel instead of 7.40

It all depends on what has changed in the Kernel.

According to 1989778 - FAQ: SGEN:

You can consider to use SGEN in following scenarios.

  • New system installation and heterogeneous system copy
  • Kernel update
  • system update with SPAM/Saint
  • system update/upgrade with SUM
  • Importing transport Request

Anyway, as I said, it depends (agree with ). You can check some programs to understand if you need or not to run SGEN. If the programs take more time to load first time they are executed it means that you could consider SGEN.

Kind regards

You will need to run SGEN on ABAP systems after these activities.

1 - SP stack update

2 - EHP update

3 - Release upgrade

4 - Kernel update with change in the kernel release (Eg: 720 to 721)

5 - System copy (R3load based)

6 - Installation

Hello,

SGEN will not make any damage, you can run it without being afraid of any damage to the system. If you think your system is slow due to compilation, you can run it anytime.

In general, it is not necessary to run it after kernel change. SGEN is generating only ABAP load which has no connection to kernel.

Kind regards
