Hi Venelin,
As such there is no maintenance required for the Optimizer. System Information > Optimizer tab should tell you the status of the Optimizer. The JMS queue state should be active and rest of the information on that screen should be populated. If you see a value "Unknown" it generally means that the Optimizer is not running or not configured correctly.
It's a good idea to check the Optimizer tab especially after an upgrade or after the server was bounced to make sure it's up and running.
