Logical and virtual host name

Hi,

Please help me to understand "what is virtual host and logical host"?

I got the following definition from scn but not getting exactly.

  • A 'Virtual host' designates a simulated host running for example on top of a VMware.
  • A 'Logical host' designates a network/host configuration which associates a physical host with one or more additional host names and dedicated IP addresses. This is used, for example, to be able to move systems from one physical host to another.

Please help me to understand  by giving simple example.

Thanks and Regards,

Akshay Jagtap

Hi Akshay,

For instance: If your Sap system is a Hight availavility implementation. You should use two "Logical Host" in order to make a Fail Over Cluster.

Two hosts that belongs to a cluster must have logical hostnames to move resources. But when you want to put a name at that cluster is a virtual name or hostname ( it doens't matter on what host are the resources )..

Cheers

Thanks Sargan

for this brief reply but as i am new could you please elaborate it for better understanding.

I know about high availability that in case of any software or hardware failure system moves to another host untill everything is fine on the previous host.
