Single stack architecture

Hello everybody,

I have a question about the architecture of a single stack PI system.

As far as my understanding goes, a dual stack system has an integration server component. This component contains the different engines (Adapter Engine, Business Process Engine, Advanced Adapter Engine). Between these engines SOAP XML is being exchanged.

Now on an java only installation we are talking about an AEX engine. Is it correct to assume that this AEX is handling all tasks of the integration server within this single component or is there also an "integration server" on java only PI installations?

Is the communication on a PO system between AEX, BPM and BRM handled by an integration server component or are we talking about another component which allows these engines to "talk" to each other?
