HANA SID naming "best practice"

Former Member

Hi,

We are about to implement some HANA's as databases for Netweaver systems.

Any recommendations on what SID's to give the HANA systems?

  • The same as the Netweaver system for which it is a DB servers perhaps? (you will now have duplicate SIDs registered for licensing, the SLD, Solution Manager, etc.).
  • Something completely different?

What is the best approach in terms of naming convention in your experience?

Thanks!

Adriaan

Hi,

we are discussing the same.

For same ID speaks:

You see at first look wich SAP belongs to which HANA

You are used to it 😉

For different ID:

ABAP and HANA on one server

Multitenancy (?)

If a customers calls and speaks about SID XYZ, you don't know if ABAP or HANA

If sidadm user is in LDAP, the will perhaps mix up

Best regards

Hi Adriaan,

From SAP NOTE: 1953429 - SAP HANA and SAP NetWeaver AS ABAP on one Server

It is understood that separate SID's are required for SAP HANA & SAP NW AS ABAP Server.

Hope this helps.

Best regards,

SUJIT

I think it is understood that when putting ABAP+HANA on 1 server that we must have separate SID's to make that happen.

However, his question is if it is required/recommended to be separate when we are using the standard configuration of having a standalone HANA server.

I cannot find it in any documentation, but it would make my life much easier if I could.

I will make you clear on this

1. Your HANA  DB & SAP APP is on same Host -> Here obviously you cannot have same SID

2. Your HANA DB & SAP App is on diffrent Host -> Here you can have same SID's

I have my systems installed with option 2 i.e same SID's and i dint see any problem here .

Again,

The question is not what is possible, we all agree there.

The question is what is best practice, and is it stated by SAP in any documentation.

The real answer is it best practice to be separate, being that CTS+ cannot distinguish between Native HANA transports and standard ABAP transports if they have the same SID.  Unfortunately I have not been able to find this written down anywhere.

Hi,

concerning CTS, please find my comment more on top when this was first brought up.

We can have same SID as of SAP Netweaver . For example you can have the following

XYZ as SAP NW 7.4

XYZ as SAP HANA DB

For licencing it will not be an problem . your HANA DB will have separate license and SAP NW will have separate license.

Hi Adriaan,

from Hana Installation Guide

11.40 sid

Specifies a system ID. The SAP system ID (SID) is the identifier for the SAP HANA system.

Requirements

● The ID must be unique throughout your organization and consistent throughout

your SAP system installation landscape.

● If you want to install an additional application server instance, make sure that no

gateway instance with the same SAP SID exists in your SAP system landscape.

● The ID must consist of exactly three alphanumeric characters. Only uppercase

letters are allowed. The first character must be a letter (not a digit).

● The following IDs are reserved and cannot be used: ADD ALL AMD AND ANY ARE

ASC AUX AVG BIT CDC COM CON DBA END EPS FOR GET GID IBM INT KEY LOG

LPT MAP MAX MIN MON NIX NOT NUL OFF OLD OMS OUT PAD PRN RAW REF

ROW SAP SET SGA SHG SID SQL SUM SYS TMP TOP UID USE USR VAR.

Syntax

In the command line, the following syntax is used:

--sid=<SID>

or, in short form:

-s <SID>

Remarks

This parameter is available in interactive mode.

This parameter can be specified once and automatically substituted throughout all

parameter defaults, which use sid as part of their default value.

11.41 storage_cfg

Specifies a location where a global.ini is defined. It is possible to set up a storage

Adriaan,

2 cents on this, I think they should be different if you plan on using CTS+, as CTS+ will not be able to distinguish between ABAP and HANA.

Did you find your answer or a best practice guide saying otherwise?

Hi,

in CTS, you can only use one SID once per complete landscape (domain and linked domains). Nevertheless, having just one SID for ABAP and SAP HANA does not hinder you from setting up separate landscapes for the ABAP and the SAP HANA parts in CTS. You can 'invent' an SID for your SAP HANA systems. CTS+ does not need the real SID of teh system.

But whenever possible, I would recommend to use the real SID as this simplifies identifying the systems when you look into your system landscape in TMS.

Details how to set up CTS+ for SAP HANA and what to do if you cannot use the real SID of the SAP HANA systems are described in the HowTo guides: http://scn.sap.com/docs/DOC-8576#HANA

especially in chapter 7 'Configuring the SAP HANA Landscape'

Kind regards

Karin
