Oracle shutdown without shutting SAP CI or APP servers

Hi Experts,

In couple of cases, I have seen DB off line backup kicked in while SAP CI
and APPs are not shutdown

System is back on line and normal when the off line backup has been
completed.

We are using SAP Kernel 7.20_EXT PATCH 400 and Oracle 11.2.0.3

Just wondering, when the system does have very low activity, is it safe to
restart the database without shutting the SAP app and CI servers?

Or still it should be a normal practice to shut apps and ci first and
then database and start up in reverse way,

It is not a good practise to shutdown DB without shutting down apps and CI server in case of planned downtime. This will leave the SAP processes in reconnect mode and sometimes results in hang state.

I believe you need to refer the how database and SAP works together and start stop process.

If you have seen the stopsap script.

1st thing is R3trans check database is up or not.

Then instances are stopped and finally database are stopped which maintain consistency and ATOMIC nature of database.

A very basic example - If you understand the startup process, it's SAP that connects to DB not Db to SAP.
