If you want to integrate it with CHARM you can, but it is not required.

Hi. I'm about to configure the Change Request Management feature in Solution Manager. If any of you can provide links to useful information about configuration and general tips, that would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

No it is not required. The Service Desk can work fine without it.

I just noticed that in the IMG under basic steps it mentions under Service Desk to activate Integration with Change Request Management.
