Kernel Upgrade on DR Server

Dear All,

Please advice me the precautions to be taken before going for a kernel upgrade on DR Server ( Disaster Recovery ).

SAP is on windows and DB is SQL 2005. Currently we have a DR server on standby getting log files restored from Primary site. We are performing a kernel upgrade on Primary site. There is no File system replication and hence kernel has to be upgraded on DR as well.

1> Is it OK if we directly replace the SAP kernel files on DR or need to stop the DR Database and perform it?

2> Also should the log file shipment needs to be stopped when performing this activity? If at all we stop the log shipment and restoration on DR, can these be resumed after the kernel is upgraded ?

Thank you,

KK

Kernel upgrade can be done in the same way you do it on the primary node.

For sure you will be stopping the primary SAP system when you do a kernel upgrade. If you are stopping the database as well then log shipping will be interrupted.

You just need to put the new kernel at primary and standby and if the DB was stopped start and make sure the log shipping is working.

If your DR system has a running SAP application on it, then you will need to stop the SAP application.  However, you do not need to stop SQL Server or do anything with the database for a kernel update.  So, if your DR system is a standby database system receiving log shipments, but the SAP application is not actually running on it in normal operation, then there is nothing special you need to do.  Just update the kernel.

Hi Kiran,

Better would be to stop DR to perform the standard procedure for kernel upgrade.

2> Also should the log file shipment needs to be stopped when performing this activity? If at all we stop the log shipment and restoration on DR, can these be resumed after the kernel is upgraded ?

There is no need to stop the log shipment process.Logs would be applied after execution of standard SQL quries at DR end.
