Partner Functions do not update in customer master

I am using 1A as partner function for 1st level hierarchy node. When I attach a sold-to to this hierarchy node and save in transaction VDH1n, the customer master for the sold-to doesn't get updated with the partner function 1A and customer number in the partner function tab under sales area data.

Can someone throw any light on why this is happenning and how to fix this? Does this require using user-exit to make it happen?

Please check if proper settings are maintained in transaction code VOPA - Maintain Partner Function (for Customer).

Make sure you have maintianed the right entries for Partner Type,Error Group,Higher level Func and for the Customer Hierarchy type.

The settings are correct. Is there any way to update the partner function in Customer master? Do I have to use user-exits for customer master enhancements?
