Dears,
Now we plan to perform client copy from one system to another system.
I plan use SCC8 to export , then use STMS to transport , last import by SCC7.
Who implemented it before ? Could you please tell me the spending time for every step ? Then I could make a time plan for this.
And any thing need to pay attention for client copy by this way ?
Thanks,
Michael
Hi Michael,
Once if you run the report RSSPACECHECK you can know the space required to perform the client copy.
This process involves two phases export which will generate RO,RT,RX and KO,KT,KX data and cofiles. The second phase involves the process of importing and post step SCC7.
So, I feel it takes double the time of export. of course, it depends on resources like memory and CPU utilization and the profile which you select.
Thanks,
Pavan

Hi Michael,
Till now I haven't seen a client data in TeraBytes, I am limited to GB .
In your case the export phase itself will take a day or more than that.
So, Ideally you have to spend a week end to finish this job .
My advise to you when you are dealing with TBs of data its better to go with DB refresh instead of Export/Import (If an online backup already exists with you).
That will definitely save time.
Thanks,
Pavan
Hello,
I was Looking for the same inforamtion
for those who are looking for numbers and statistics or just for general knowledge,
my export process details:
Full Data Base Size (MSSQL): 138GB
Number Of clients to exported: 1
Exported File Size: 21GB
Export Time: 4 Hours and 25 Min
the system is running on virtual machine:

Hi Michael,
Its all depends on your export data file size only
Please let me know you Export data file size

No, I haven't.
I decide to perform system copy, so do I need perform online or offline DB backup for source system ?
Our OS version is AIX, and DB version is Oracle,
Do you have any corresponding guide link of 'step by step for system copy ' ?
So I only need restore '/oracle' file system content of source system to target system, right?
What steps I need to do after the DB restore ?
Thanks,
Michael
Okay Michael,
Check this link which has step by step process of system copy
Thanks,
Pavan
Hi Micheal,
As said above, it purely depends on the size and the speed that your system gives.
Generally 3.7TB is very big client, and if you are looking for SAP_ALL easiest way is to do a system copy.
If you are just looking a SAP_CUST kind of thing then it won't take more than couple of minutes (1/2 hours).

Hi Michael,
Yes, we need copy 'SAP_ALL' profile .
So could you give me the probable time for the step Export / Transport / Import ?
How long do you spend before you perform client copy for 'SAP_ALL' ?
It is not feasible to perform client copy of 3 TB database. It will run for days ..and has very limited probability of getting this completed.
You have following options
1) Perform backup/ restore as suggested by Nick. This is faster .
2) In case you have TDMS tool, you can make selective data copy to target system. It will take less time then client copy and only selected data gets copied rather than whole database which will happen in scenario(1) mentioned above.

Deepak Kori
There are 4 clients (000,001,066, 100) in source system.
and there are 7 clients(000,001,066, 100,300,400,800) in target system ,
we plan copy client from source100 to target300, DB total size of sourc100 is 3.7T and used 3T, target300 total is 1.1T and used 0.8T.
It cannot be successful by remote client copy (export/import) ?
It will impact other target clients if use system copy by backup resotre method.
Thanks,
Michael
Hi,
Easiest/fastest approach:
1) Check the size of 100, 400 and 800 clients in your target system
2) Export these 3 clients (If the size is less)
3) Do a system copy using backup/restore method
4) Create a new client 600 and import 100 client into that
5) Import 400 and 800 clients
6) You will have 400 and 800 as it is, 100 with source system's data and 600 as copy of your old 100.

Hi Loy,
Could you please give me some advise for following confuse:
1.The SID is different between source and target system , is it impacted by backup restore method ?
2. Our OS version is AIX and DB is Oracle, where I can find corresponding guide(step by step) for system copy using backup/restore method ?
3.Source client DB size is 3.0 T and target client OS free space only 0.9 T,
so do I need extend 2.1T space to the file system '/oracle/SID/sapdata' first ?
4. do I need use brtools to extend the data file of corresponding tablespace(eg: PSAPSID , PSAP700, PSAPUNDO....) ?
Thanks a lot,
Michael
Hi Michael,
1) Will it impact other target clients if use system copy by backup resotre method ?
Backup restore method will restore full database and will overwrite everything on target system.
If Target system has 2 clients while source system has 1 client then with this method, post restore target system will also have 1 client.
2) How to use TDMS tool, where I can download it ?
You need to procure license to use TDMS tool. Once you are licensed you can download the same from SAP service marketplace.

Deepak Kori
Hi Michael,
1.The SID is different between source and target system , is it impacted by backup restore method ?
No impact on target system for SID. But post restore target system will have same client like source.
2. Our OS version is AIX and DB is Oracle, where I can find corresponding guide(step by step) for system copy using backup/restore method ?
You can use System copy guide available at SAP service Marketplace.
Additional help can be found here http://sapbasis.blog.com/2011/12/31/sap-with-oracle-homogeneous-system-copy/
3.Source client DB size is 3.0 T and target client OS free space only 0.9 T,
so do I need extend 2.1T space to the file system '/oracle/SID/sapdata' first ?
YES. Ensure Target system has similar storage space like source.
4. do I need use brtools to extend the data file of corresponding tablespace(eg: PSAPSID , PSAP700, PSAPUNDO....) ?
Just ensure enough storage space is available. During restoration no need to extend any tablespace.
Hope this helps.

Deepak Kori
2) Export these 3 clients (If the size is less)------->The size is not less, where could I export them ?
You can export the client within system, it doesn't mean that you are going to import in another system.
If you export client from system A, it generates transport requests whcih can be imported into same system immediate after system refresh so that you get data of source system and the old clients as it is.
Regards,
Nick Loy
You can export these clients on file system level in form of transport requests.

Hi Michael,
You can use control file with 'w' parameter for R3trans.
Refer; 1942 - How does R3trans work?
Goto client copy section

HI Michael,
So you would be performing a system refresh.
You should take a consistent backup of your target system 1st with log files.
You can go with online or offline back, you choice and strategy.
You have to export important tables from your target system like for Logical systems, RFCs, Client Setting, Printer, USER master etc.
Generate the control file for target system using "alter database backup controlfile to trace" and edit it as per target.
Restore and recover database and do post processing steps.
You can download the system copy guide from service market place for AIX+ORACLE.
Also, on SCN there are many links for this.
Hi Divyanshu,
Thanks for your reply.
"You have to export important tables from your target system like for Logical systems, RFCs, Client Setting, Printer, USER master etc."----------Could you please tell me the related tables name ? which table for RFCs ? why need export Printer & Logical systems & Client Setting ? User master could by export 'SAP_User' profile, right ?

Export T000, Printer Table TSP03 and TSP03C
or got SPAD to export printer configuration

Either create a transport from se01 or export from R3trans
To export user master data, use SAP_USR profile in SCC8
Also,

Hi Michael,
Time required to perform client copy depends on various parameters
- Type of client copy ( local/ remote/ export-import)
- Server resources ( CPU, RAM)
- DB size
- Network throughput & latency
- Client size
There is no formula to calculate the time required to perform client copy.

Hi Hong,
Perforn test run with some predefined parallel process.
Run RSTABLESIZE & RSSPACECHECK to find size of client in se38. Refer SAP Note 118823 - CC-ADMIN: Size of a client
