Hello Tuerk,

I think it is not possible to patch without a downtime, However the downtime is very short and it is always advisable to have a recent backup. And once the patch is complete we will have to revise the hana client in our landscape to the same version that is residing on the server.

It's true that the actual patching typically is done pretty quickly.

However, especially the import of the delivered content can take some time... so, this really is a downtime - not just a short outage.

Concerning the client software upgrade: this is only necessary when a new SPS is installed, which is a major operation anyhow.

Dear Lars,

In an active / passive database setup. Can I run a rolling database patching? Patch the passive node, switch from active to passive node and then patch the second node?

However Near Zero downtime Upgrade can be done using System Replication

Nope - the standby node works with the same piece of software - so there is no rolling upgrade.

With the scale out environment where there is active and passive node (standby), it is not possible to patch the passive node because the passive and active shares the same binaries as Lars mentioned.

I think it would be possible if the HANA environment has DR environment with system replication where there is a secondary site that has complete set of HANA server besides the primary HANA server and replication happens between primary and secondary.

In this situation, it may be possible with temporarily disabling the replication and patch the secondary node then patch primary. However, this process would be bit more complex because synching up two environment would be the key with activating the replication after the patch upgrade.

Dear Alex,

Hope you are already aware about the information in slide 12 and 13 in the SAP HANA revision strategy document https://websmp105.sap-ag.de/~sapidb/011000358700001182742013
