SQL server error log alerts from solman: G:No errors

Hi all,

We have got monitoring in place for several customers.in our Solution Manager 7.1 SP10

For our customers who have got SQLserver databasse running, we are receiving emails that there are errors in the error log of SQLserver for those customers.

When I look at the alert, it shows the following:
alert text value : G:No errors

In the error log of the SQLserver database, there are no errors to be found.

If there are no errors, why is solman reporting that there are errors?
Is it because the text :"G:No errors" contains the word "errors" , and is that the reason that this is happening?

If anyone knows why this is happening, and how to solve this, please let us know.
When I confirm the alert, another email will be in our email inbox after about 30 minutes.

Thank you in advance,

Best regards,

Menno

Hi all,

SAP came back with an answer:
Implement note 2011421 - SQL Error log in last 24 hours

You should implement the source code in Solution Manager, and if applicable, do the 2nd part of the note on our monitored system which has the SQLServer database.

I have implemented this note this morning, and so far no new alerts have appeared in our inbox.
It might be too soon to know for sure if this is the solution, but I thought I'd share this with you guys already.

I'll wait until tomorrow afternoon to see if the alerts stay away.

Will keep you all posted.

Menno

I think it's safe to say that note 2011421 solved the problem.

I will close this thread.

Thank you all for your imput.

Hi Memmo,

Can you check the below template and usage with threshold values in your system ?

Hi,

Yes these are set:

Hi,

I believe it could be because of this Metric. Can you check the threshold values of this ?

Divyanshu

The following Metric is active:
Error Logs in Last 24 Hrs

In the tab "overview", it says:
Red - Severity 20 or higher errors in SQL server error log

Green - No 17 or higher errors

The tab Threshold is not showing much:
Threshold Type: *            Already Rated

I believe this is the standard value, as we did not change this.

I think G: no error means.. Green: no error was reported.

Please disable the notification on this, at check again when this alerts generally comes.

Hi Divyanshu,

Can you explain what you mean by disable the notification?

Do you mean to uncheck this metric? or change the treshold?

Yes, goto MSSQL template and disable it from their, then re-apply the template on your systems and confirm.

Hi,

But when I deactivate this metric, no errors will be reported anymore, and we do want errors in the SQL error log to be monitored for our customer systems.

Surely this must be a bug of some sort, or another way to only exclude this "G: no errors" ?

Thanks in advance,

Menno

I just want you to check with this metric alert mail deactivation.  If this works, may be we can make changes to it.

Ok, I will deactivate it, and wait till tomorrow to see if we receive any mails regarding this SQLerror.

I will let you know tomorrow how it turns out.

Thank you for your help so far,

Hi,

Well, no mails received when the mteric is deactivated. When I activated it again this morning, mails are coming in again.

So, now we know know the source for this alert.

We have to change the notification mechanism for this metric, perhaps a threshold need to be changed.

Can you share the details on this template(all tabs in edit mode)

Goto your custom templates, which you created for technical Monitoring -> Check on the notification tab and Alerts tab -> Select Expert Mode and share the results.

Actually, we have to disable notifications when the status is green.

Also,

The send notification for should be red and yellow only.

Hi,

First of all, thank you for your time and feedback, I really appreciate it !

I think that is what needs to be done, but according to the Alert settings, this is already set.

Here the screenshots of the Notifications tab and the alert tab:

Hi,

Can you goto the template and select metric tab,

Click on the correct metric and then threshold tab.

Share the values.

Yes,this is set to Red and Yellow only.

The SQLerror log is the only metric where we get emails when everything is Ok (Green)

So it cant be a global setting...

I think I will raise an OSS message for this.
I will let you know what the outcome is of  out.this.

Thank you very much for your help so far...

Hi all,

Sorry for the delay.

Unfortunately the notification is still here.

We still receive emails which say that there are SQL error => 20

When I check the alert, it states that the error is: G: NO ERROR.

I guess an OSS message to SAP for this issue will be the next step.

When this is resolved, I will post the solution.

Thanks !

Hi Meeno,

What type of alerting are you using ?

Have you checked SQL Event Logs ?

What is the OS and DB of your solution manager system ?

Divyanshu

Hi Divyanshu,

We are using the email alerting from solman_workcenter. We created a template for the SQLServer database. In this template the alerting for SQL error log is active.
Out Solution Manager system is solman 7.1, SP10, on Windows 2008 R2 and Sybase 15.7.0.110

I checked the SQLserver error log that the alert was pointing to, but there are no errors to be found in this log in the past 24 hours.
When I confirm the alert, another email with this same alert will appear in the alert inbox about 30-60 minutes later.

This is happening for almost all our customer system that have SQLserver 2008R2 installed.

Hi Memmo,

How are you retrieving information using templates ?

Is from event logs ?

Hi Memmo,

Please check the following SAP notes to see if this helps.

2011421 - SQL Error log in last 24 hours not working or SQL Setup displaying gray if no errors

2006729 - E2E alerting for SQL Server

Kind regards,

Roland

Hi,

Im not sure what you mean:

As stated before, we have got monitoring in place in solution manager.

Our client systems are connected to solution manager, and the diagnostic agents are sending it's data to solman.
In transaction solman_workcenter, tab "solution manager: configuration" --> "technical monitoring"

Step 4 "Template maintenance" , we copied the standard template, and created a template for database SQLserver for our client system.

All Metrics are active, but only a few "alerts" are activated. SQL error log entries is active, and that is why we receive emails if there are errors in the remote system's error log of SQL server.

Hi Meemo,

You can goto your target MSSQL system for which alerts are coming. Goto Windows Event Viewer in Admin tools and check for the return code number and message for this alert.

Hi Roland,

Thank you for the notes.

2011421 I have found as well, and is not related to my issue.

2006729 and the notes supplied in this note also do not seem relevant to my issue.

My issue: Solution Manager reports : "G:No errors" , and it looks like because the word "error: is in here, solman thinks it is an error.

I cannot find this text in the SQL error log itself.

Here a screenshot of the alert in the alert inbox:

Hi Divyanshu,

I looked for this in the even viewer on the customers (satelliet) system, but no entries are found.

Neither in the event viewer or in the SQLserver error log.

Menno
