Hello Sanket,

Here is the difference

Global trans: As name suggested,it is global directory (usr/sap/trans)required whenever we have multiple SID configured in single domain controller. Take example (DEV-->TEST-->PROD).
DEV is domain controller for DEV, TEST, PROD. In this case trans directory is common for all three system (DEV, TEST, PROD) ,this trans directory is called Global trans. Once transport is released from DEV system, Data files and co-files created to Global Trans. While importing the transport in TEST AND PROD , tp pick the data files and co files from same Global Trans.

Local trans: Local trans is trans directory which is not part of common domain controller. Take above landscape (DEV, TEST, and PROD). Each system has its own domain controller i.e. total three
Local trans directory for DEV, TEST, and PROD.  Datafiles and cofiles need to copy to each trans directory whenever import need to be done.

How SAP systems recognize local and global trans??

SAP system recoginze the local or global trans based on the domain configuration. If system is  part of common domain controller then it points to Global trans and vice versa

Akshay

Hi Saket,

Global trans dir:

/usr/sap/trans

Global transport directory for all SAP systems

The global transport directory is used by the Change and Transport System (CTS). The CTS helps you to organize development projects in the ABAP Workbench and in Customizing, and then transport the changes between the SAP systems in your system landscape. For more information, see the Change and Transport System documentation.

This is dir which used by all the system inside the landscape and shared among all the hosts (server).

Please also check below help.sap.com for more understanding.
