How do we sync up ECC financial master data with MDG-F?

Former Member

We knew that there is a SAP supplied tool called MDMGX and the tool is used to extract financial master data out of ECC and we can load up in MDG-F as an initial load. This will take place during MDG-F implementation. That way master data 100% is in sync across ECC tables and MDG-F tables at that point of time.

Overtime someone may change old or create new master data in ECC directly without going through MDG-F. If so, data would be out of sync. If that happens, what technical process that is out of the MDG-F box we can use? Would MDG-F have the ability to catch net changed objects (newly added or changed) made in ECC alone and to initiate table updates in MDG-F in the right sequence systematically?

Any thought?

Thanks,

Luo

Hello Luo

To add to Michael, you need to decide cut-off date for data changes in ECC. Once the cut-off date is fixed then make sure that no user get access in ECC system. If they need access to change any financial master data (in case of critical situations only) then you may ask them to use firefighter ID so that you can track the records. Once changes are carried out in ECC you can any time get it changed in MDG.

But as suggested by Michael, don't use ECC once you are live with MDG.

As I progress, i have had two questions for discussion.

Question #1- we are using MDMGX to extract the financial Master Data out of ECC for the initial load as part of the first go-live for MDG. The question is for the subsequent go-lives, do we bring Data through MDMGX(ECC) to MDG or load to MDG first. Please note that not all the attributes of ECC are on MDG?

Question #2  Does MDMGX keep track of the last extracted Data Set? If there was a exception change to the master data in ECC, does MDMGX keep track of the changes?

Thanks,

LUO

Question #3 - there are reference data such as Account Group using in GL account. Reference data is refering to those whom are created in ECC alone. How can we bring reference data into MDG-F? is this done through MDMGX Initial Load? How can we keep it in sync between MDG-F and ECC going forward?

Hello Luo

1. On data extract - the best way to load incremental data is to use file upload. You can use MDMGX extractor to load the initial data and then use file upload for loading subsequent data.

2. If you make any changes directly in ECC, definitely it is for limited set of data. You can change the data in MDG manually with the proper approval process. Create a separate change request type to handle all such requests. Its better for tracking.

3. For loading reference data, you can use BC sets or do the direct table upload in MDG through transport. Attaching the list of all the tables. Create BC set and upload the reference data in MDG or ask basis team to transport the tables listed in the excel.

Hi Luo,

Question #1

You should always use MDMGX. Mixing MDMGX with other capabilities like file upload might confuse your end-users since they need to work with different technologies. W.r.t. missing attributes, you could of course enhance the data model in MDG-F according to your needs and include the fields in MDMGX and its inbound processing, too.

Question #2

No, MDMGX does not keep track of extractions or data changes. Nevertheless you can define the extraction criteria in a way that the resulting file contains only your changes. But as mentioned above, you should never change any record that is centrally governed by MDG-F outside of MDG.

Best regards

Hi Luo,

using MDG-F any changes to governed records (meaning records that are to be maintained within MDG-F) that are done directly in SAP ERP are somewhat against the idea of MDG. Using MDG you should never change anything outside of MDG. If you still do the same, you should ask yourself the question: "why do I use MDG at all?".

Anyways it is not forbidden to use MDMGX at any point in time to extract and upload data to MDG.

Best regards

Michael
