How to specify Dimensions in PS and store Dimensions in MM ??

Dear Experts

We're implementing for Steel Manufacturing and we have the following 2 problems.

Problem 1:
The bottle neck area for your project is to use existing stock in new projects. Especially when you have requirements of plates with specific dimensions with specific grades coz u can store such material in SAP not using dimensions but weight.

However, we proposed the following solution for the plates.

Solution 1:

- Each material master represents a material specification.

- Each material is split into 2 master records of 2 material types (Valuation types Don't Workin this solution)

  > Mat.Typ 1 :- New .. UoM = M3
  > Mat.Typ 2 :- Used ..UoM = Kg

- Each project will order the New materials either by (Procurement Type) PR+Res for WBS / Or/ Res. for WBS --> MRP --> PR PO etc.

- Project will order New material per M3. Dimensions will be set in the component text.

- any leftovers from the project will be issued as "Assembly Items" per Kg.

- Each Used material master (material specification) will have cost per Kg which is proportionate to the cost of the New material ------> 1 M3 = 4Kg ... etc

- Issuing assembly items will reduce the cost of the project by the amount of the leftovers and increase the stock for the material master (material specification) by Kg.

- Used materials availability (Quantity) and viability (Dimensions) will be checked only by physical inventory (Human Check) for further use not by the system.

Problem 2:

When we convert the reservations to purchase requisitions using MD51 - the text field in the material component in which u may plan to store the dimension details will not get copied to the purchase requisition - this is because there is no one to one linking between planned orders and purchase requisitions.

Solution 2:

((Awaiting for your answers))

The Questions here

Does anyone have a better solution than than solution 1 ??????

Did anyone reach a better workaround that is more suitable ?

if so, Please share with us because we're still no so convinced with this solution and we don't know what to do.

And if you can also please help providing solution 2 it would be verrrry great of you.

Thanks

i think you need talk to MM consultant because this process can be capture though conversion factor.

rest Store location between PS or MM is nothing if any material with Q that is project specific material and without Q that is inventory specific which come under sap MM.

if you want your existing inventory to come in current project then you can initial upload it with Q movement type561 in MB1C transaction.

Thank you for your reply Mr. Sanjeev

We did consult with our MM team. we know how to manage the project stock and how to transfer stock both ways. The issue is that we cannot manage it by unit conversion because:-

PS only deals with the Base unit of measure.

so according to the unit conversion solution:-

Create material master "Sheet XX" BuM = M3
                                                        AuM = KG

                    1 M3 = 7000 KG

so, in project, you assign a material component and choose material Sheet XX, if you order 0.5 M3 it's ok .... but if you are dealing with leftovers and you have to order by KG the system won't allow it.

How do you propose a solution ?

HI,

In that case you have to move in SD scenario as create quantity contract wherein background you can put wbs as account assignment at item level so herein you can put UOM as per business requirement.

and you can change required quantity also as per execution schedule.

Hi

In SD quantity contract the final goods movement is 601 (GI -> Sales Ord.). What we need here is 281 (GI -> Netw./WBS). You're not suggesting that to acquire materials for a project I should go through the sales cycle to add the requirements via a BOM or something, are you? Plus in the end it will be reserved to the sales order, not available to the WBS element.

The only thing the WBS element is going to affect is that it's going to bare the cost of COGS, and the revenue of the Billing transaction. However, this would be documented like it's issued to a customer (even if dummy customer) and not issued to the project phase.

This is like super super workaround, I don't think my client would approve of it.

having 2 material masters is much easier despite the fact that the costing of the used one is not going to be updated automatically by purchasing.

On the other hand, we thought of valuation types But valuation types don't have their own units of measurement

Let's not deviate from the original questions:-

-How to Store Dimensions on the system and how to acquire them?
-How to transfer the text from material component, through MRP, and to the PR -> PO ???
