Windows Phone 8.1 and Afaria

Windows Phone 8.1 is due to be released in the next couple of weeks. From Microsoft, this update brings many enhancements to the OS in terms of Enterprise control and MDM capability.

Is Afaria ready, or releasing an update to address these new features and functionalities?

Hi Mike

Here is the notice posted on http://frontline.sybase.com/support/the support website:

Devices running Windows Phone 8.1 will not enroll in Afaria 7 SP4 and below.

Microsoft is planning a release of a new version of the Windows Phone OS later this year. In our early testing we have found a change that was made to the OS that will prevent a Windows Phone 8.1 device from enrolling in Afaria version 7.0 SP4 and below. The issue is centered in the device's support of the SCEP certificate request protocol during enrollment. SAP is working on compatibility with Windows Phone 8.1 for Afaria 7 SP5 so that devices can be enrolled.

A planned Afaria release, Afaria 7 SP5, will include backwards compatibility for Windows Phone 8.1 devices. SP5 will allow Windows Phone 8.1 devices to enroll in Afaria and be managed at the same level as Windows Phone 8.0 devices are managed today. Afaria 7 SP5 is currently estimated for release sometime in Q3 2014 (timeframe subject to change).

Support for the new MDM capabilities introduced by Microsoft in Windows Phone 8.1 is planned for a future Afaria release.

Devices running Windows Phone 8.0 that are currently enrolled in Afaria may upgrade to Windows Phone 8.1 and will continue to be managed by Afaria.

Customers should consider instructing users to enroll Windows Phone 8.0 devices in Afaria before they upgrade to Windows Phone 8.1.
