Java SE programmer confused where to begin interfacing with SAP

I use SAP daily at work.  A colleague was venting frustrations with quality personell not checking certain transactions before signing off order.  I want to create a UI that will check these transactions for them with a IBASE number and order number.

My question is, where do I begin?  I know the java side but how do I connect with and manipulate sap?  Can I use SE or is EE required?  Is there an sap API and if so where do I get it?

Im having trouble finding information for someone with little sap technical know how.

Hi Jacob,

You should look at SAP JCo: http://service.sap.com/connectors > SAP Java Connector.

That page appears to be password restricted even beyond SCN.  What is required to get access to service.sap.com/connectors?

You need to use your SMP user/password. You can check SAP Service Marketplace Frequently Asked Questions.
