PI/PO 7.4 Installation Options

I have a unique system PI/PO installation request.  The project I am on just approved PI/PO 7.4 as part of the project.  We have a SLD AS JAVA 7.4 system working currently as our central SLD.

My question is and I have never heard of it being done is can we install PI/PO 7.4 Java only on top of an existing AS Java 7.4.   It does not have CE on installed so this is a plain AS Java 7.4 with only SLD installed and configured as a Data Supplier to Solution Manager 7.1.

If we have to install a separate system that is ok,  we are just looking at options:

As far as I knew, there is no option to install Java stack over existing Java stack.

There are main differences in Java systems of your existing SLD instance and new PI/PO instance (though both has NW 7.4).

Better to have PI/PO system as a "standalone" as new instance (on new hardware or existing hardware, if resource is sufficient) & still you can use existing Java instance as dedicated SLD (as like now).

That is what I thought but sometimes it helps to think outside the SAP box.
