Regarding SAP GUI for Java Installation

Former Member

Hi,

I am really new to the installation of SAP GUI for Java. I have a requirement to Install this SAP GUI for Java Portal Server. I have downloaded the required Jar file and followed the OSS note and a blog for the iinstalltion. What I noticed is that both the OSS note and blog suggest to extract the jar file to a recommended folder in Portal but are not specific to which folder it has to be extracted.

Can any body please help to which folder in /usr/sap/<SID> should i extract the Jar file.

Thanks & Regards,

Vijith

Hello Vijith,

I guess you are talking about <a href="https://service.sap.com/sap/support/notes/1034932">note 1034932</a>. It is currently being changed, what it will basically say is:

If you put the jars somewhere in /usr/sap and later on upgrade the engine you will actually loose the entire folder and will have to copy the jar files again.

As a permanent solution you could define an <a href="http://help.sap.com/saphelp_nw04/helpdata/en/ee/0618d0899001408d821096c85ff8a2/frameset.htm">HTTP Alias</a> on the engine (not an application alias but an http alias) which will point to a folder on the file system outside the /usr/sap folders.

After that just set JavaGuiCodeBase for the applet to whatever you chose for the http alias name.

If you have suggestions to further improve the note, please let us know.

Hi Rolf,

Thanks a lot for your reply. The SAP note 1034932 is not available but the point of Http alias was very helpful. I am sure you will be able to answer the following queries :

I am having a AIX Portal server and Windows Client machine. So I extracted the Jar files required for Windows and placed the same in the server. Now what happens is that every client system when I try to access an iView of type SAP GUI for Java the Initial request is to Install SAP GUI for Java. If I press cancel then I am unable to preview the iView.

Is it that every client machine has to have SAP GUI for Java Installed to preview a SAP GUI for Java type iView?

Does every client machine need to have JRE and applets enabled to run SAP GUI for Java type iView?

Thanks & Regards,

Vijith

Hello Vijith,

note 1034932 is now online again.

Running SAP GUI for Java inside the browser as an applet indeed requires an installation on the client.

On each client, an iView should be displayed using SAP GUI for Java, a JRE has to be available and SAP GUI for Java needs to be installed.

The advantage is that that way it can do more than a pure Java applet could do and loading SAP GUI for Java is faster and does eat bandwidth using it the second time.

The browser has to be set to allow applets to run and a Java plug-in has to be available. On Windows it is even possible to install the JRE from the web page, SAP GUI for Java is running from.

See manual for details and the entry field "SAP GUI for Java only: URL of Java plug-in installation file" in the configuration dialog in the portal.

Best regards
