All,
There is a need for synchronous call from System A to R/3. I would like to know if there is value in using XI in the middle other than channeling request/response, controlling flow, error monitoring (mapping - I doubt because R/3 will take in and give out exactly as required by the system A) etc.
I am looking at both side of the picture to see if there is anything obviously missed out
m
This can also be done using BAPI's with a third party program acting as a integration broker !!!! But check out the dev time u take and the maintenace plan. when compared to these XI plays a vital role in a big picture. u have everthing in place i.e. alert, control flow etc in xi and in the other part u wud need to have it done explicitly via coding

Hi,
This actually depends entirely upon your requirements. Either ways it is possible.
You have lot of blogs for XI. For ABAP you can see this:
/people/thomas.jung3/blog/2005/05/13/calling-webservices-from-abap-via-https
/people/thomas.jung/blog/2006/03/13/develop-a-web-service-that-sends-an-email--in-abap-netweaver-04s
/people/thomas.jung3/blog/2005/05/09/abap-webservices-logon-language-processing
Also try to post the same in ABAP forums also for getting more responses and then you can validate on your own.

Hi,
We had implemented the similar scennario synchronous call from SystemA(Web Service Provider) to R/3 using XI. Intially wanted to do with ABAP, directly from SAP calling webservices. ABAP didn't support some of the complex data types in WSDL. SAP recommended to go with XI. Implemented with XI very easily and working fine.
