Hi Experts,
We are planning to
Options: ECC5.0 upgrade to ECC 6.0 and Install EhP6
Or directly upgrade ECC 5.0 to ECC 6.0 with EhP6.
Please advise.
Thanks and Regards,
Joshi.
Hello
This was discussed here few days ago.
http://scn.sap.com/thread/3513506
did you get a reply from SAP about the upgrade path ?
What I have understood from the SUM guide is that the upgrade is possible from ECC 5.0 to ECC 6.0 EHP7

Hi Reagan,
As per the below note also possible to direct upgrade &
as per guide we need to meet prerequisites. ( OS 64 bit & DB MS SQL 2008) but MS SQL 2008 not supporting for ECC5?
What is the steps to follow to direct upgrade from ECC5 to EHP7?
1878193 - Central Note - Software Update Manager 1.0 SP10 [lmt_006]
Thanks
Siva
Hello Siva
You are right for SQL Server based systems according to PAM the MSSQL 2008 is not supported with ECC 5.0. But there are SAP notes indicating that there is a temporary support available and the upgrade should be done after the move to the new OS and DB. Please read these SAP notes.
1443424 - Migration path to Win2008/MSSQL2008 for 4.6C and 6.20/6.40
1476928 - System copy of SAP systems on Windows 2008 (R2): SQL Server

Hi RB,
Yes it's possible to upgrade from SAP ERP 2004 to EHP7.For more information on this SAP recommended two SAP Notes 1737650 - EHP7 for SAP ERP 6.0 SP Stacks - Release & Information Note & 1742750 - Upgrade from SAP ERP 2004 to EHP7 FOR SAP ERP 6.0 (Java) .
Recently i'm performing this upgrade & following these two SAP Notes.
Regards,
Gaurav
Hi RB ,
As per your below note.
1443424 - Migration path to Win2008/MSSQL2008 for 4.6C and 6.20/6.40
- Upgrades running on Windows Server 2008 (R2)/SQL Server 2005 as well as upgrades running on Windows Server 2003/SQL Server 2008 (R2) will not be supported.
The upgrade must be started immediately after the system migration. The system must not be used productively until you reach the end of the upgrade downtime.
The instructions documented below should be performed on the migrated system running Windows Server 2008 (R2) and SQL Server 2008 (R2).
I clearly mentioned the above point In my first posting .
Thanks
Siva
My reply was not directed at you instead correcting the replies stating that the upgrade is possible from ECC 5.0 to ECC 6.0 EHP 7
Now back to your reply. You are suggesting multiple upgrade runs to the OP which is not required.
Getting the OS and DB to the supported level is a prerequisite for all upgrade activities.
Like I said there is a temporary support for OS and DB during a migration activity and that is helping here for going to EHP7.

RB
Hi Joshi,
you have to upgrade your OS/DB first and perform your SAP upgrade afterwards.
Indeed are there restrictions for the SP level and kernel to run MSSQL 2008. Please see following note:
#1076022 - Release planning for Microsoft SQL Server 2008 (R2) - (Point 2b)
The upgrade from MSSQL 2005 to 2008 does not take too much time. You can finish this step within some hours. Please find the respective guides at below path:
"Database Upgrades"
"MS SQL Server"
"Upgrade to and Installation of SQL Server 2008 (R2)"
So you have to upgrade OS/DB BEFORE (!!!) upgrading the SAP system. This state is supported for upgrade purposes, but not for productive use.
The upgrade from ECC 5.00 to ECC 6.07 can be performed in a direct way (see attachment of note #1878193).
Cheers,
Andreas

Hi Rakesh,
Can you please let me know if you could upgrade directly? what path did you use for the upgrade?

Hi Rakesh,
You cannot upgrade Directly from ECC 5 to EHP6, find below steps.
1. win 2003 64 bit source , MS SQL 2005
Upgrade from ECC5 to Ehp5 using SAPup tool
You have to do system copy to target system ( WIN 2008 & MS SQL 2008) or you have to upgrade your OS win 2003 to 2008 & Database 2005 to 2008
2. Target: win 2008 , MS SQL 2008
Upgrade EHP5 to ehp6 or ehp7 using SUM tool
Note: Immediate you have to migrate win 2003 to win 2008 & MS SQL 2008 because win 2003 will not support for ehp5.
OR
OS : 2003 - DB MS SQL 2005
ECC5 -------> ERP 6
Upgrade OS : 2003 to 2008 - DB : MS SQL 2005 to 2008
ERP6 -------> Ehp6 or ehp7
Thanks
Siva

Hi Rakesh,
For your upgrade scenario there is no direct upgrade path. As per PAM you cannot directly upgrade from ECC 5.0 to ERP 6.0 EHP6.
Refer PAM link
Based on PAM and related information I could suggest following approach
1) Upgrade existing ECC 5.0 to ERP 6.0 on Windows 2003/ MSSQL 2005 ( System A)
2) Install a new system with ERP 6.0 on Windows 2008 R2/ MSSQL 2008 ( System B)
3) Perform homogenous system copy from system A to System B using export/import method.
4) Perform upgrade to ERP 6.0 EHP6 on System B post migration.
Hope this helps.

Deepak Kori

Hi Deepak,
Seems the PAM contents need to be updated.
We recently performed direct upgrade from SAP R/3 46C to ERP EhP6. So as I understand, a higher source release like ECC 5.0 should have a direct upgrade path to ERP EhP6.
Checking the ERP EhP6 Upgrade guide at the SMP, the support source release includes SAP ERP Central Component Core 5.00 also.

Srikishan
Hi Sri,
I appreciate your information. But before we reach to a conclusion whether direct upgrade path exists, we need to check OS/DB compatibility as well as each SAP release. This information can be found only in PAM.
Upgrade guide does not provide OS/DB compatibility information.

Deepak Kori
Hi,
Would recommend option 2, go directly to the ECC 6.0 EhP6. Can avoid additional SUM run just for EhP..
Also please check the upgrade guide at http://service.sap.com/instguides

Srikishan
