Can't run non-UNICODE-DbSl against UNICODE database

Hi everyone. I get this error during the update of Solution Manager 7.1 SPS4 (dual stack) to SPS10. It is a green install. This happens during the
phase PREP_EXTRACT/PREIMP! Of the ABAP stack. Step 5.2. I do not see a lot of people with this problem, so I assume it is something I am doing wrong, as it is my first time using the tool SUM.

Details of the system:

  • Solution Manager 7.1 SPS4
  • Windows 2008 R2 64 bit
  • Microsoft SQL 2008 R2 64 bit SP1
  • Central installation type with all components on
    the same host
  • Kernel level 600

Here is what I have done so far:

  • Downloaded the media as described in the installation
    guide.
  • Worked my way through the install using the
    Software Provision Manager 1.0
  • Updated the Kernel from level 401 to 600, by
copying the files from the download folder to the F:\usr\sap\SM1\SYS\exe\uc\NTAMD64
folder. This is the folder that is assigned to the DIR_CT_RUN parameter.
  • I start the STARTUP.BAT file in the SUM folder.
  • I then start the SUM GUI and run through the
steps and in step 3 I map the Stack configuration file (XML) to one listed in
    the folder “51047130\DATA” called “SPS10_stack.xml”
  • Then I
get to 5.2 where the system stops with this error:

Severe error(s) occurred in phase PREP_EXTRACT/PREIMP!
Last error code set: Single errors (code <= 😎 found in logfile 'PREIMP.ELG'

Can
anyone please help?

PS:
The admin user that I use do have access to the database. It is listed with
sysadmin role and the default DB is the Solution Manager db.

ETW000 TRACE-INFO: 22:  [    dev trc,00000]  Can't run non-UNICODE-DbSl against UNICODE database

This looks like you have picked up the wrong kernel.

You cannot use a Non Unicode kernel with a Unicode system.

I must have downloaded the incorrect kernel files by accident when I downloaded the patch files. My appologies to everyone that spent time on this. Special appologies to Sunny.

Hi Andre,

Download the unicode kernel and replace with the existing one with SUM exe and kernel with the orignal one. Hope this help.

Or generate new stack xml as suggested by Sunny and document suggested by Reagan.

As per error, you have used wrong kernel. Please make sure that you use unicode kernel as your system is also unicode.

Thanks,

Thank you for responding Sunny. When the system asks me in step 3 (I think) for the target system, should I use the SPS10 DVD for solution manager (media 51047130), or should I use something else? I went back to SMP\Installations and Upgrades\A-Z Index\S\SAP Solution Manager\SAP Solution Manager 7.1\Installation\Microsoft Windows\Microsoft SQL-Server and re-downloaded 51047130 SAP Solution Manager 7.1 SPS 10, but got the same results. So looking at that list, what media number should I then use in step 3 to map to an xml file? As I said, this is my first time using the SUM tool.

I looked at Note 1577909 as the Master Guide suggests, and this note states to download the ABAP and JAVA stacks. I then went to SMP\patches\A-Z\S\SAP Solution Manager\SAP Solution Manager 7.1\Support Package Stack Download and chose SPS 04 as the source and SPS 10 as the target. I chose all the Windows x64 related downloads, as well as all the DB independent downloads, but if I then run SUM, only JAVA is available to update. Please help.

Hello,

Please make sure that while you select OS-DB dependent files that time you should download unicode kernel files only.

Thanks,

Sunny

Sunny,

I am very familiar with unicode and non-unicode systems. All my R3 systems are unicode systems. This one is a dual stack x64 unicode system. Whenever I am presented with the option, I choose the 7.20 EXT x64 unicode kernel files. I think the bigger problem here is my unfamiliarity with the SUM tool and do not know which files to map when it asks me for the target system stack xml file. Until now, I believed that stack file to be the one on the DVD "51047130 SAP Solution Manager 7.1 SPS 10", but from what you and Reagan says, it seems I should use another DVD or files. Could you help with which ones I should use?

Here is the link to the media files, which ones should I use as the target files in step 3 of a dual stack system?

Hello,

You should download stack file from MOPZ in solution manager which will calculate all dependencies.

Thanks,

Sunny

Do you have a document or slides that could help me? I am not familiar with MOPZ. Just a reminder that I am still in the setup phase of Solution Manager. The system has not been configured yet. Please do not refer me to the Install Guide or the Master Guide. I have read those and the Software Update Manager Guide, but none tells me which files to use in step 3 (Select Target). I also looked at the demo at , but unfortunately all the documents just tell me to load the stack.xml file, but none tells me which one or if it is the Kernel DVD, Solution Manager DVD or media number.
