Portal Upgrade of Customized Java Development Components from 7.01 to 7.31

Dear All,

We are upgrading our SAP NetWeaver Portal system from 7.01 to 7.31. In our Portal 7.01 system, we have development customized Java Webdypro Development components which are being used in Guided Procedure processes. Using the SUM tool, when we reach 'review The target release components list' step, we have two options against all the customized components i.e. Scan Inbox and Remove. When we select the "Scan Inbox" option, the step repeats and we see the same results without any change. And if we select the "Remove" option, we proceed to the next step. But we don't want to Remove any customized components in the upgrade process. We want to take all the customized components to 7.31 without any version change. We are not using NWDI system and non of or Portal system is under the control of NWDI.

After reading the following thread, we have found some clues. But we want a comprehensive study before the upgrade.

In the above thread, user exported the required .SCA files from NWDI. In contrary, we don't have NWDI system. We developed and deployed all the customized components through NWDS installed in standalone PC.

Please guide us how to proceed with the step where target package level remain the same along with source.

Any suggestions please?

Thanks

Hi,

If you are using the NWDS, while deploying the customized you might have created the files to deploy the same.

If you don't have those customized codes then you are in deep trouble. You have to do the re-engineering to take those customization back in the newer version.

If you have those codes then ask your JAVA developers to modify the content it suits for the newer version. However post upgrade testing will also take more changes.

Hi Raja,

Thanks for your reply.

In Development portal system, we upgraded the portal system to 7.31 and deployed the Java code to 7.31 according to the newer version requirements. But deploying the recompiled Java UI components, we have changed the UI of Java Components with a new version and the previously started Guided Procedures processes can not find the old UIs and when portal users try to open old started Guided procedures, system throws error message.

Any other suggestions?

Thanks

Hi,

All the old version code wont work in the newer versions. We need to update so that it can be compatible with the newer version. In our previous assignment as well we dont have any trace of code due to third party developed the code and we didnt maintain any version management.

We did the re-engineering for all the customization.

Atleast you are lucky i hope in this case. Make sure post-upgrade configure the NWDI and maintain the version management so that we can keep track of all the customization.

Hi Raja

Did you place upgraded code in SUM directory and re-scan the SUM or you deploy the components after the upgrade?

Thanks

Hi,

As we don't have any code i have an option to remove only.

After that we developed the customization with the specifications again.

Hi Raja,

In our scenario, "Remove" option didn't work. We have to opt "Scan Inbox"  and re-scan with upgraded or same version of components. We don't know how to do that without NWDI.

Thanks for your help and time.

If you select remove it will remove the custom components from the portal system. So that you have to deploy the compatible version in the upgraded environment.

Are you getting any error while selecting the REMOVE option?

Maybe you can try to remove those components using JSPM and then start the SUM tool.

Hi Gazanfar,

How many customization you have ? because we have also upgrade our NW7.0 Portal to NW7.3 Portal and NWDS and we selected remove and completed the upgrade. After that we have redeployed our customized apps with small modification also keep in mind that in 7.3 you will face deployment path problem during deployment.

Thanks,

Dear Mirza,

Thanks for your reply.

Infect apart from other customization components we customized Guided Procedure workflow CAF application which also contains all the past history of portal users completed workflows. All customized application which is not the part of workflow or contains past history, can be "Removed" in SUM process and deployed further. But workflow applications like Guided procedure which contains workflow history should be upgraded along with other components.

Did you upgrade GP application?

Thanks

Hi Gazanfar,

Even we have workflow configured (ESS/MSS, leave mgmt etc.,) which comes as it is after the upgrade. The only way I suggest is go ahead with above screen and finish your upgrade activity and check the results. Sometime system response is different even though if we have same component.

Thanks,

Mirza
