Hi all,
The question keeps coming up more and more often in lieu of SAP's strategic alignment with OpenText and their xECM product.
Is there a definitive answer out their, on what the future for SAP DMS is, and whether it will be included as a core application within SAP.
Any comments would be appreciated.
Freddie.
Hi Freddie
From what I have seen, SAP DMS is continuing development and is still required for a number of the newer products like Engineering Control Center and some of the integrations with Visual Enterprise.
That said, I have seen a shift away from SAP DMS largely due to it not being a true enterprise content management solution and the lack of usability. EasyDMS is there, but it has limited functionality. The reality is it can't do what products like XECM can do, and where it does, it has usability issues.
Long term, I don't see SAP DMS disappearing completely, but you will find a large portion of the consulting work shifting to XECM so you will probably need to become skilled in both.

Athol

Freddie,
As many SAP clients had reached a maturity level to archive their structured(DB data) & unstructured (Document data) OpenText is better option.
Yes, as Deepak Quoted xECM provides many features like:
While SAP DMS has it is own merits xECM MAY win.

Hi Freddie,

SAP DMS is already delivered as a core application within SAP and will be enhanced with each SAP release.. As there are no major developments on the content server release (post 6.40 ) future of MaxDB being used as content server is not very clear.
Also as Opent Text is being used as an alternative for content server, customers are inclined to use features available within Open Text Document Management system .
Hope this helps.
