Oracle 10g to SQL Server 2012

Hi,

We are planning to upgrade our SAP. Our environment: Windows Server 2003, ERP ECC 6, Oracle 10g.

Am looking for guides to migrate our Oracle database to SQL Server 2012.

With new server, may I know how to convert our data from oracle to SQL Server 2012?

Matt explained it well.

If you have license from Oracle then you can get new license from SAP/Microsoft (For MSSQL).

If you have license from SAP then also you can get new license from SAP/Microsoft (For MSSQL).

*In second case, it is easy to get because it's just like a replacement from SAP.

In both the cases you should contact SAP, better contact your account manager.

May I know if there's any conversion fee required from licensing wise payable to SAP if we change from oracle to MSSQL?

the database will be solely used for SAP and nothing else.

As Nick said, whether or not there's a fee payable to SAP most likely depends on whether you purchased your database runtime license from them or from Oracle.  Certainly you will need to purchase a license for SQL Server, either from Microsoft or from SAP.

However, even if you purchase your license from Microsoft (and purchased your previous license from Oracle), you will still need to talk with your SAP account rep about the OS/DB migration, because your SAP license is probably database-specific, and you will need to have it modified to allow SQL Server.

What would be the pro and con if I purchase from Microsoft directly for SQL Server?

And what happen if I purchase SQL Server license from SAP?

You'll probably want to get quotes from both and compare total cost.  Remember in this equation the cost of support (if you get the license from SAP, then you can get support for it from SAP), and the cost of core-based licenses (your contract terms may differ, but if SAP supplies the license then a typical scenario would be that you can install and use SQL Server as much as you like as long as it's for an SAP system, whereas if Microsoft or a reseller supplies it, then you'll want to look into getting a subscription to install non-production systems without additional cost (if these are still available) and/or face paying for each and every core on every server).

Since you currently get your Oracle license from SAP, chances are that you can negotiate some kind of migration pricing, which will likely be less expensive than buying licenses outright yourself elsewhere.  However, again, you can't know until you get some quotes and compare.

Also before this activity check the per-requisite of MS SQL 2012 in SAP Note 1651862. Check the required patch level in note 62988 - Service packs for MS SQL Server.
