Hi,
This is a common behaviour. I found the same error in differents PI servers, though the communication is ok.
It seems like Axis and ping channel functionality don't like each other.

Please check if the Axis adapter is installed by hitting below url after making changes in host and port.
http://host:port/XIAxisAdapter/MessageServlet
and second if there are any related CA certificates required to install.
PFB the link where you can get idea to check if Axis adapter is working fine and details regarding installing jars related to Axis.

I am getting Synchronous time out error in this channel and messages are getting expired with Read timed out error.
Below setting I have done in channel:
URL of webservice: as provided by ws team
Authentication basic with user name and password.
SOAP version: 1.2
Soap action: as provided by ws team
Encapsulation format: MIME
XI paramerters:
keep XI headers: unchecked
Keep attachments: unchecked
Payload extraction: SOAP body
Can you please help to resolve the issue?
