Some questions to you and also to your client.

1. What is the third party software all about?

2. How is it integrating and with which solution of SAP?

Third party applications which integrate with SAP generally perform the DB level operations. They can be on premise/installable solutions which are solution extensions to SAP solutions. These are called add ons.

They can also be lightweight applications running on a browser or a mobile device which connect to SAP Business Suite via secured communication.
