we are using module tab to include the adapter modules. We can create adapter modules for file content coversion, reading data from adapter , dynamic configuration etc. just see the below links.
You can write Your own adapter in XI.For EX:If you want to retrieve/send the data from PDF or excel file,You will have to write your adapter module using Module processor and that U can add in the module tab.........
