You are going to need to get a lot more specific and explain this more with probably some screen shots of what you are talking about.
Batch characteristics values would not update a material master view. If they are, I suspect someone wrote a bad design spec or a programmer misread it and is updating the wrong object in some user exit or program somewhere.
