Why do we use more than one planning area.

Hi Gurus,

I am new to SAP APO.

We use different Planning Areas (PA) for DP and SNP, but in DP itself we use different PAs.

1. Is this is only to reduce system load ?

2. On what basis we create different PAs ?

Regards

Lalit

Hello Lalit,

Multiple areas are usually designed in APO DP to segregate and run the batch processes ( it can be data loads or macro execution or something else...) simultaneously.

Having two planning areas and running the individual processes doesn't get into a bottle neck of locks on the planning areas. Usually, from system architecture perspective it would be a wise decision to get the demand forecast planning in a different planning area and any master data info to be maintained in a different planning area so the updates can happen in parallel.

Hope this helps. Get back to us if you have any questions on this.

Thanks & Best Regards,
