what is the speed for HANA backup

Experts:

We setup a demo hana system and the database copied into is about 2TB.

We notice it takes about 5  hours to backup it to file system.

It is too slow.

1) if when apply note 1697613, can we start the applications first then do a backup?

2) any way to speed up the backup, what is the normal speed for hana backup?

3) if I use backing to 3-rd party utility, can it improve speed?

If you want to restart SAP HANA XS, proceed as follows:

Stop all the applications that use the database.

Activate SAP HANA XS. When you do this, specify the host on which you want SAP HANA XS to run:

ALTER SYSTEM ALTER CONFIGURATION ('daemon.ini', 'host', '<host name>') SET ('xsengine','instances') = '1' WITH RECONFIGURE

SAP HANA XS is started automatically, and the volumes of the service are created automatically.

Create a new data backup.

Start the applications that use the database.

You don't need to wait until the backup completes to start the applications.

You can trigger the backup and start the applications.

2) any way to speed up the backup, what is the normal speed for hana backup?

The DB backup is taken to the filesystem level and then the backup set or the files are backed up to the backup server. Eg: TSM

If the duration of backup taken to the filesystem level is not acceptable then I would check that with SAP Support. Have you tried taking a backup using the Studio Manager manually to see whether it takes the same time ?

3) if I use backing to 3-rd party utility, can it improve speed?

This is a question to be answered by the 3rd party solution provider. For sure there should be ways to optimize the speed of the backups by using multiple channels and other options as well.

Yes, we tried studio manager and it took about 5 hours.

What should be the normal speed? 800GB/hour?

I am not sure the standard speed of the backup to disk. But you can refer to these notes and raise an OSS message to SAP for assistance.
