In XI software component version and product are logically defined under Software Catelog in SLD ( Software Landscape Directory).

Product:

A software product is composed of one or more software components.

It represents a collection of all versions of a product. A product is a unit that

can be delivered, is visible to the customer, and that is installable and renewable.

Software Component:

Represents a collection of all versions of a software component.Software components represent the reusable modules of a product. They can beupgraded or have patches installed.

Software Component Version:

Represents a particular version of a software

component.

Information from System catelog is used in :-

the Integration Repository to organize development efforts .

In integartion Directory to drive the specific configuration of integartion scenerio.

The realationship between a software product and its constituent components is described in SLD by an association called a Software feature.

A Software component is a is a unit of software delivary that has its own support track.

A software Product is composed of one or more software components.For instance, the product R/3 version has components

SAP ABA

SAP HR

SAP GUI

All design work in the IR is organised by Software Component Version.

Products are installed on Technical Systems,which describes the concrete structure of systems in the data center.

All design works in IR is organized by Software Component Version. This make sense, as interfaces logically belongs to a software component and to a particular version. Before development can begin, the software component versions(SWCVs) must be imported from the SLD to IR.
