Hi,
The main difference is that, in R/3 the first line of defence it S_TCODE, i mean its completely based on Transaction.
Where as B/W is completely object based i.e, it deals with securing Infoobjetcs, Infocubes, ODS, BW Queries, etc....
For more ingormation on BW Seecurity, please visit:

Hope it helps.
Please award points if it is useful.
thanks & regards,

Hi,
R/3 Security is Transaction Based & has predefined security with most authorization objects and authorization checks already defined
BW Security is Query Based & has predefined security with limited authorisation object and authorization checks already defined

BI7.0 also offers a quite different approach in that the characteristic restrictions are defined at the authorisation level via transaction RSECADMIN rather than PFCG. In fact you can then assign the authorisation directly to a user rather than via a role if you so choose.
