Virtual SAP MaxDB 7.9 - Online Backup on ESXi & SAN

Hi,

we have a SAP "development" System with MaxDB 7.9 running Windows 2012 on vmware esxi 5.1; vmdk disks for system, swap, DB, LOG and backup file.

SAN is an DELL Equallogic PS6100X (10K SAS). IOMeter performance test seams to be successfull (Windows 2012 - VMware RR 4P - PS6100-bytes.jpg). The drives for DB and backup are on seperate controllers.

During backup the performance is not as good as we expected (ScreenHunter_18 Nov. 06 16.03.jpg). We only get 3.5MB/s per kernel.exe thread.

We have no comparable system. Is this normal in virtualized SAP systems only to achive a backup rate of 100-120GB per hour?

Or can we also backup on Network Shares or NFS targets? An RDM device instead of vmdk is also possible, but i dont think that the target ist the problem.

Thanks in advance.

Alex

Hi Alexander,

the backup performance has to be analyzed in detail. Please use Database Analyzer and switch on the time measurement The database Analyzer should run in an interval of 60 seconds. you can u´se sap note 1676903 to get help for analyising the results of the Database Analyzer data.

We have customer systems which run backups of 1 tbyte in an hour.

If you need further help please open a Custoemr ticket on component BC-Db-SDB.

Regards, Christiane
