BW on SAP HANA - Questions

Former Member

Hi experts,

i wanted to ask a few things about BW systems with HANA:

1) After the migration to SAP HANA DB (first upgrade frm 7.x to 7.3 SP5 anh then migrate to HANA), i can use DSOs and Cubes existing without making any further changes for improving the performance or do I need to first convert them to use the in-memory technology?

2) If i wanted to use the native environment of SAP HANA to create the same objects (characteristics and keyfigures) that have in a Cube, I have to create a new object with Visual Studio or is not necessary?

3) Why should I use VisualStudio and not continue to create objects with the DW Workbench?

Many thanks.

Hi Charly,

1.) You can use existing DSOs and you need to change these DSOs to HANA Optimized if they take lot of time in DSO activation.

Check here for conversion of DSO:

http://help.sap.com/saphelp_nw73/helpdata/en/ab/ff28d090744388b67595684bb96206/content.htm?frameset=...

Well you can convert all your InfoCubes to HANA Optimized Cubes as you get better loading and reporting performance and it makes Infocube design and maintenance simpler.

Check here for conversion of Infocube:

http://help.sap.com/saphelp_nw73/helpdata/en/14/268a8602b241d0b6df1e6f3028c702/content.htm

To know more, check this blog: When should InfoCubes or DSOs be converted to the HANA-optimized versions?

http://www.saphana.com/docs/DOC-3129

Additionally, you should also read BW ON HANA Cookbook:

https://cookbook.experiencesaphana.com/bw/

2.) For creating new objects like key figures and characteristics, you have to use your BW Workbench only. You can't create these objects in HANA Studio. Already created objects in BW on HANA system reside in HANA only. You can check InfoObjects Master data tables and other tables in HANA Studio also

3.) As already told above, you will generally be using BW workbench only, you will use HANA Studio only for few scenarios like performing Manual Merges, Creating Views, Importing BW Models into HANA and for performance checks etc.

Vivek

HI

Check the below document on BW7.4 on HANA:

http://scn.sap.com/docs/DOC-48044

It has many new functionalities and features.

Now we can see InfoObjects in HANA Studio also

Hi Vivek,

given that my BW is 7.01 EHP1 and I have mainly DSO, Cubes, APD and MultiProviders and reporting consists of Query and Workbook 7.x e partial from BO XI 3.1 (Universe + Query + Report), I would like to undergo other practical questions, and that is, after made the upgrade to BW 7.3 or 7.4 on HANA , I can do:
1) Convert DSOs and Cubes for HANA?
2) Change the loading of data in order to optimize by setting flag on DTP ? This is enough to bring the data into in-memory Hana?
3) The Bex queries and workbooks are supported on MULTIPROVIDER: I can directly use them without doing anything or do I have to do something to use in-memory?
4) In BO XI, the report i can
be used directly or I have to create a snapshot query?

5) Other things to do ...

6) What is the difference at performances query level if this query read the data from Infocube optimized HANA (BW Schema managed) and if the same schema of the cube I create a native HANA level as Calculation or Analytics View? Why should I create the schema in the native level if I already have the cube?

7) I can run directly Report BO XI 3.1 o 4.1 on BW on HANA with Query Bex on Multiprovider with Cube optimized for Hana?

😎 What is the necessity of export of model BW InfoCube into HANA design ? This model exported have data o then i may loading the data from external ? I can run report BO on this model into Hana or not ?

9) What is the difference from export of model BW InfoCube into HANA design and create Query snapshot into Hana ? I can run report BO on this ? What is the differences and the performances relatives ?

Many thanks.

Hi Charly,

So finally what method you guys choose to model new scenarios in BW on HANA?

We are thinking to calculate all RKFs and CKFs in BW DSO and store it there. And then we are thinking to make queries on that Big DSO. Did you guys try such new modelling ways??

Please share feedback.

Thanks

Hi Charley,

HANA-optimized DSOs are also available for BW 7.3, but as of 7.4 Optimized DSOs are now obsolete — sufficient improvements have been made to push logic down into HDB that standard DSOs perform as well as (if not better than) optimized DSOs.

(See SAP Note: 1849498 on reconverting them back)

Here is a link to more in-depth BW 7.4 on HANA presentation from the HANA 2014 conference:
