We have close to 20000 documents under document type SCM. We have a vendor who need authorization to work with some of the documents say10000. But we don't them to see remaining confidential documents. We are thinking of creating a new document type with all authorization to vendor. For that we need to replicate selected SCM documents to new document type. Need to transfer all document's characteristics and attachments to new document type without impacting the existing document type.
You may want to consider using authorization group to control access to select SCM DIR. No DIR change required just setup and assignment of authorization group(s). Some role changes would be required also.

A DIR can be assigned 1 authorization group. Multiple groups can be defined and assigned selectively to control access to DIR.
Setup multiple roles with authorization object C_DRAW_BGR with various authorization group values. For example Group 1 = VEND, group 2= NOVD (for no vendor access).
Role xxxxVEND includes only C_DRAW_BGR = VEND
Role xxxxNOVD includes both C_DRAW_BGR = VEND, NOVD
Assign role xxxxVEND to the vendors ID
xxxxNOVD to all internal users.
Assign Vendor valid DIR authorization group VEND. They can now only access those DIR.
You can control other rights like read only (3), and certain status only.
Using NOVD is optional if you assign all internal user C_DRAW_BGR = *
