SAP system copy problem with the log file

Former Member

Hallo,

currently I make an SAP system copy with the following components.

The source system (windows2003):

- SAP instance DEC

- MaxDB Version 7.8.02.23

- MaxDB Studio 7.9.08.00

- The logfile are in the D: drive

The installed target system (windows 2008):

- SAP instance NEW

- MaxDB version 7.8.02.23

- MaxDB Studio 7.9.08.12

- The installation is in the P: drive

The approach is the following:

Action in DEC:

1) DB backup via MaxDB Studio >> backup-file org_dec

Action in NEW:

2) Start with MaxDB Studio 7.9.08.12

3) Initialize the DB

4) Change the db data files from - d:\ ...... to p:\

5) Delete the log file

6) Start the recovery

......but ..the DB disconnect and the recovery stoppt! The error message is:  Volume D:\sapdb\DEC\mirrsaplog\M_DISKL001 cannot be created.

The problem is, I can't create a new 😧 drive in the target system NEW. How is the solution for this problem?

Regards,

Richard

Hi Richard,

actions on source system are correctly done.

But on the target system you may not delete the log volume ( in your case a file)  even when a data backup only contains the application data and the before images a valid log file is necessary.

So please use on the target system the following procedure

Database Studio -> Administration Tasks -> Recovery -> recover a Medium

The wizard asks you if you want to initialize the database before the recovery - this is the important difference which you have to choose

MARK check box initialize Database before Recovery

-> NEXT

Then choose the backup and change the configuration of the source system which is displayed to the target system. - here you can change the log file destination.

This process is called homogenious system copy. If you are a SAP custoemr you can find SAP notes about this process in OSS System.

By the way you can integrate both databases into the same database Studio and administer both databases in one database studio with the version 7.9.08.12.

Hello Christiane,

thank you for your answer.....

MARK check box initialize Database before Recovery

-> NEXT

Then choose the backup and change the configuration of the source system which is displayed to the target system. - here you can change the log file destination.

On the target system:

In my case I choose the "initialize Database" before Recovery and the MaxDB Studio viewed the following steps:

  • Parameters Initialization - I choose "Restore parameters from backup"
  • Next- Parameters from Backup - I choose the backup-file from the source System
  • Next ....preparing Parameters...
  • Adjust Parameters - I change "General Parameters"  from D:\sapdb\data\wrk\DEC to :\sapdb\data\wrk\NEW
  • > OK and > Next
  • Data Volumes  - I change all data volumes from D:\sapdb\DEC\sapdata\DISKD00xx to P:\sapdb\NEW\sapdata\DISKD00xx (with no problems)
  • Log Volumes
    I change log-files from D:\sapdb\DEC\saplog\DISKL001 to P:\sapdb\NEW\saplog\DISKL001
    I change mirror-file form D:\sapdb\DEC\mirrsaplog\M_DISKL001 to P:\sapdb\NEW\mirrsaplog\M_DISKL001
  • >OK - Message: Create P:\sapdb\NEW\saplog ? > OK
  • But now I get a message with following content

"-24892 the directory D:\sapdb\DEC\mirrsaplog does not exist"

Richard

Hi Richard,

sounds like an error in DBStudio- but would you pelase try to run the Restore as I told you with the Initialize flag. This is the recommended way to do a system copy.

Do you get the same error when you use this way?

Hi Christiane,

yes, with the "initialize database" first and I get the same error message...

Hi Richard,

it look like the problem is caused by mirrored log - could you do the system copy with logmirrored NO?

Hi Christiane,

in the target system? The parameter is UseMirrodLog. Currently is the value "YES"

When I change this value - I get a error message: the directory D:\sapdba\DEC\saplog does not exist..

Hi Richard,

ok - it sounds more and more strange.

I could not reproduce this issue so far  in my envirnoment.

Are you a SAP customer? Then please open an official SAP ticket on component BC-DB-SDB

and provide SAPDB connection to your target database ( note: 202344).

MaxDb Support should have a closer look on your system directly.

Sorry, I ran out of ideas

Hi Christiane,

thank you for your help!

Yes it is realy strange. I found a older Max Studio in my archive (7.9.08.07) but the same reaction.

I tryed again with the following approach:

1) delete the log file D:\.......

2) create the log file with C:\...

3) and I create the mirror with C:\

The result is not an error message and I could start with the recovery and the new database is online.

I will read a SAP ticket! I think this is not normal.

Thank you Chritiane for your ideas

Best regards,

Richard

Hi Richard,

Christiane is out of office, so let me reply instead.

Thank you for reporting this issue - we were able to reproduce the error following your instructions.

We are working on this via "problem tracking number" PTS1251100 (you can track the progress at http://maxdb.sap.com/webpts).

A possible workaround would be:

1. Change Log mode from 'mirrored' to 'single'.

2. Create a backup and use it for your system copy

3. Switch log mode back to 'mirrored'.

Thorsten

One more thing:

In case you have already created a ticket at SAP, please let me know the reference number, so that I can put the same info in the ticket...
