Hello Ron,
that is possible.
Actually, the XI alert category is based on SAP Basis Alert Management API.
but which XI version and SPS you are running ?
After Pre XI 3.0 SPS 14, the alert category has been re-desinged.
Pre XI 3.0 SPS 14,
1. EndtoEnd monitor has to be configured;
2. Note also, that in pre SP14 systems an alert is only triggered when an
XI Message object has been created, i.e. sender adapters which fail
before creating the XI Message will not be recognized by the EndToEnd
Monitor and thus cannot create an alert.
for more detail, refer to SAP Note 913858

Hi Aaron,
I am running on PI7.0 SPS10.
Does this have any impact on the way I use Alerts?
Hi,
There are 2 kinds of alerts,,
1. Alerts without BPM
2. Alerts with BPM.
Alerts without BPM are used in real time to montior any error in yoyur landscape. Whenever an error occurs, the alert will be triggered. This will also include Adapter Engine Alerts
Please look into this blog for Alerts without BPM,
<a href="/people/michal.krawczyk2/blog/2005/09/09/xi-alerts--step-by-step">Alerts Step by Step</a>
For Alerts with BPM where you use a Control step to trigger the Alert, this blog will help,

Hi,
From your answer, can I confirm that alerts I defined in ALERTCATDEF can be used by for Non-BPM interfaces?
The essential difference between BPM and Non-BPM alert triggering is BPM allows a control step to trigger an alert.
Please correct me if I'm wrong.
Thanks.
Ron
Please look into the blogs I have mentioned and try to see the difference.
1. In the case of Alerts from BPM, the Alert Category you define in ALRTCATDEF, you will select the option DYNAMIC TEXT so that text is sent from the BPm.
2. In the case of Alerts from non BPM , you willl define container elemeents in ALRTCATDEF , long and short text in ALRTCATDEF. You will also deifne Alert Rules in Alert Configruation from RunTimeWorkBench.
In the case of BPM Alerts, no Alert Rules are needed as you use a Control step to trigger the alert.
