"Checking Horizon" in APO

Hi,

I would like to know if the field CHKHOR (checking horizon) under the tab ATP in APO material master is used for scheduling of externally procured materials?

Kindly confirm if this field is considered during the scheduling of an order for purchased parts? If so how it is used in scheduling?

Hi

Use

This function performs a product availability check using the checking horizon. The checking horizon is calculated in days or in workdays according to the calendar.

Integration

You can map the replenishment lead time, for example, in SAP R/3 using the checking horizon. The replenishment lead time in the material master is transferred using the CIF integration model. Note the following:

  • If you have maintained the total replenishment lead time for a material produced in-house in SAP R/3, it is transferred to SAP APO and mapped as the checking horizon in the location-specific product master data.
    • If you have not defined the total replenishment lead time for a material produced in-house in SAP R/3, the system reads the in-house production time and – if it exists – the goods receipt processing time. The system interprets the total of both times as the replenishment lead time for the availability check. After being transferred to SAP APO, the total of both times is mapped as the checking horizon in the location-specific product master data.
    • The system does not take account of the total replenishment lead time for materials procured externally. For external procurement, for the availability check with replenishment lead time, the system always interprets the total processing time for purchasing, planned delivery time, and goods receipt as the replenishment lead time. After being transferred to SAP APO, the total of these times is mapped as the checking horizon in the location-specific product master data.

You will find more information in the documentation for this example.

Prerequisites

To perform a check using the checking horizon, you must have made the following settings:

  • You have entered the checking horizon and the calendar for the checking horizon in the location-specific product master on the ATP tab page.
  • You have activated the checking horizon in the check control in Customizing for Global ATP under Product Availability Check ® Maintain Check Control.

Features

Only the product availability check takes the checking horizon into account.

Within the checking horizon, the system checks if sufficient receipt quantities and stock are available to cover the requirement. The system generally considers the requirements that lie temporally beyond or at the end of the checking horizon as available.

The configuration of the checking horizon is often the reason why rules-based ATP is not carried out, since the original requirement is confirmed based on the replenishment lead time.

To avoid confirming any larger quantities, you should restrict the quantities. You can do this by carrying out an additional check against product allocations for the period that represents the end of production capacity, for example.

The product availability check that uses the checking horizon only produces meaningful results if you plan in regular intervals (ideally on a daily basis). The confirmed quantities are then compared with receipts. This is necessary because the delivery date of an order that was confirmed for the checking horizon on the previous day, already lies within the checking horizon on the current day, and thus leads to a shortage. This shortage could then block creation of the delivery, for example.

Product Availability Check Using the Checking Horizon

The customer wants 20 pieces on the requirements date (that is, the complete delivery). The receipt of 100 pieces is completely reduced by an issue of 100 pieces. Taking the issues into account, the additional receipts of 50 pieces and 6 pieces cannot fully cover the requirement.

A different situation occurs when the checking horizon is used in the product availability check. Again, the requested date cannot be confirmed. However, the delivery proposal offers either staggered partial deliveries of 10 pieces, 6 pieces, and again 4 pieces at the end of the checking horizon, or a complete delivery of 20 pieces at the end of the checking horizon.

Hi,

Yes, The checking horizon field is even considered for materials which are procured externally, but the way the checking horizon is calculated for materials procured externally are different when transferred from r/3 to APO. Based on the checking horizon & checking horizon calendar your MBDAT gets calculated while scheduling.

Hi Gomathi,

As far as my knowledge goes, checking horizon is used in GATP to let the system know if demand is within this range then check for suitable receipt to fulfill this demand and confirms accordingly. If the demand is within checking horizon but there is no receipt available to fulfill that demand then confirm the availability without checking for receipts at the end of checking horizon

In case the demand is outside checking horizon then confirm the availability without checking for receipts at customer requested date (assumption behind checking horizon is business will be able to make the goods available and fulfill customer demand within this horizon either by in-house production or by procuring it externally).

I don't think this has an impact in scheduling, because if it does then the basic assumption behind checking horizon goes for toss.

Hope this answers your query.

Sorry, if you are talking about ATP scheduling then it gets considered for externally procured materials as well.

My initial thought was scheduling in PPDS
