Unicode Kernel is meant for Unicode SAP Systems (all new SAP Systems are mostly Unicode based)

Difference between KERNEL & EXT KERNEL =>

SAP Kernel 720_REL vs 720_EXT? Which SAP Kernel Release 720 should I use?

Hello

You need to read this note to understand why there is such a kernel.

Note 1553300 - 7.20 EXT Kernel - Extended Kernel Maintenance

Reason and Prerequisites

SAP Kernels are built on a specific version of the Operating System and compiler.

When the OS or the compiler which are used during the builds run out of vendor support customers could run into a support problem. SAP therfore needs to provide a newer kernel which is built with the newer / supported version of the OS and compiler.

Against this background, an update of the SAP kernel make environment is  required from time to time resulting in newer kernels being made  available for the customer. Using these newer kernels ensures that  customers can operate a fully supported environment at all times.

From a compliance perspective it is important that a customer  environment is a fully supported one. Some of the compliance regulations  (SOX, FDA) also require that customers use supported software environments.

Hi Jatin,

SAP Kernels are built on a specific version of the Operating System and compiler.

When the OS or the compiler which are used during the builds run out of vendor support customers could run into a support problem. SAP therfore needs to provide a newer kernel which is built with the newer / supported version of the OS and compiler. Which in these cases are referred to as EXT Kernel.

Against this background, an update of the SAP kernel make environment is required from time to time resulting in newer kernels being made available for the customer. Using these newer kernels ensures that customers can operate a fully supported environment at all times.

Unicode and Non-Unicode depends of the database codepage installed for the SAP system.

Hope this helps.

Hi,

The usage of the 7.20 EXT kernel as an alternative to the 7.20 kernel is supported for all SAP NetWeaver releases which are supported with the 7.20 kernel. The following NetWeaver releases are supported with 7.20 and 7.20 EXT kernel:

  • SAP NetWeaver 7.0
  • SAP EhP1 for SAP NetWeaver 7.0
  • SAP EhP2 for SAP NetWeaver 7.0
  • SAP NetWeaver 7.1
  • SAP EhP1 for SAP NetWeaver 7.1
  • SAP NetWeaver CE 7.1
  • SAP EhP1 for SAP NetWeaver CE 7.1
  • SAP NetWeaver 7.2
  • SAP NetWeaver 7.3

In addition the following NetWeaver releases are supported with the 7.20 EXT kernel:

  • SAP EhP3 for SAP NetWeaver 7.0
  • SAP EhP1 for SAP NetWeaver 7.3

You can find more information about the 7.20 downward compatible kernel in SAP note 1629598 and SAP note 1636252

Below note for more info.

Note 1553301 - 7.20 EXT Kernel - Usage

Note 1553300 - 7.20 EXT Kernel - Extended Kernel Maintenance

A new kernel is being provided by SAP for all SAP NetWeaver releases which are supported with the 7.20 kernel. This kernel will be called the 7.20 EXT kernel. The 7.20 EXT kernel can be used as an alternative to the 7.20 kernel.
