Hello,

I would like to know what is the content of MaxDB Complete Data Backup and what exactly can be restored from it?

I ask this because I need to create backup solution that will enable me to recover SAP system, OS backup + DB backup.

Another question is, if I have 5 months old OS backup and recent DB Complete Data Backup and nothing has changed during 5 months on OS level - only MaxDB data, should that be enough to restore SAP system to the time of last Complete Data Backup or is there anything else (MaxDB related) that should be also backed up?

(I did not mention log backups and incremental backups for case of simplicity of this question).

Thanks,

Sasha

Hi Sasa,

maxdb complete backup is like offline backup of other databases like DB2 and oracle. It is the cold backup which can be restored as it is, and does not require any roll forward recovery.

you just need to restore this backup and start the db and it will be consistent.

yes you can restore the system with this  months old backup to point, exactly it was 5 months back considering there is no changes or updates either at os or maxdb level

So far I worked with Oracle. Backup with MaxDB is similar. What I wanted to know is that Complete Backup is self sufficient to restore DB if you have MaxDB software (freshly installed or restored).

Thank you all for your help.

Hello Sasha,

1)

The database system stores the data in the database in the data area. A complete data backup will backup the entire 'data area' of your MaxDB database instance. If the data area has been damaged, for example due to a hard disk error, you need data backups to restore the database instance.

2)

If you have a complete databackup taken using the MaxDB tools - you can install the same version of database software on a different machine and restore the data backup there to create a copy of your original instance there. In addition to the data backup, you may need backed-up log entries to restore the database instance to the desired state.
