We have SAP CRM opportunities, PS Projects (no networks), No Plant Maint, No CS, Resources around 600, multi skill set tracking, global resource management pool, CATS timesheet.

is it necessary to install MRS for resource management or is PPM RM functionality sufficient?

Hi Salim,

from what I read it seems that you are not planning to use PPM for project management at all. PPM Resource Management can only staff demands that come from PPM (project roles). If the integrated Resource Management in PS does not meet your requirements, MRS would be an option. Especially in scenarios were you would have to handle different demand types (e.g. PPM and PS projects).

Hi Salim,

You say that you have CRM and PPM..

Do you need manage resources in both systems?

Do you need have a integrated system to manage resources in CRM and PPM projects? If yes your requirements cannot be covered with PPM or CRM resource management functionality and you need to implement MRS.

If not, if you only need to manage resources in PPM/PS in this case the integration with CATS it is covered without implement MRS but you have to check the extra functionality that you will have if you implement it and check if you need it ( create resource request, integration with GIS...)

I hope this can be useful...,

Thanks Clara

We do not want to do RM in CRM only in PPM.

Once a CRM opportunity is at X% probability we would create a proposal in PPM and do the RM in PPM

Hi Salim,

within PPM Resource Management you can staff resources to roles of the project and assign these to tasks. You can have a staffing directly within the project or there is a cross-project view in the Resource Management role of PPM. In PPM there are different scenarios who is allowed to staff (e.g. project lead, resource manager, extended process using candidate manager).

The demand on the role level can be defined either as a block without distribution (e.g. 40 days between 01.01.2013 and 31.12.2013) or distributed on monthly or weekly level (e.g. 2 days in Jan, 2 days in Feb).

Since MRS is a dedicated Resource Management tool there are additional functions in MRS.

It depends on your process if you require these in your scenario or nor. These addtional features e.g. include amongst other

- Graphical Visualization of the resource demands and staffings (see screenshot below)

- planning down to a daily level

- more flexible definition of multiple responsible resource managers

- optimized for handling of huge number of resources/requests

So as I wrote earlier it will probably not be possible to say what you should use without knowing the detail requirements.

MRS handles demands generated from PM, PS, CRM

PPM RM only handles demands generated from Portfolio initiatives or cProjects.

Besides that if you are not intending to use Portfolio management or Project management through cProjects then installing PPM is of no use to you.

If PS is the project management tool you are going forward with then MRS is the choice.
